#1. Set Goals to Stay Motivated to Workout
Every year, I set goals for myself. In the past 5 years, I’ve set some pretty high goals like running in my first half marathon and competing in my first triathlon.
This year, I’m getting down to the basics by working on my nutrition, core and getting stronger.
Setting goals helps me plan my year and see exactly how I want to tackle it. Once my goals are set, I break them down in smaller objectives that are attainable.
Write down those goals. That will keep you accountable. Keet them somewhere visible so you’ll see them often! Grab my free downloadable running log. There’s a spot in there to record your goals.
#2. Sign-up Yourself Up For A Challenge
One way I keep motivated is by signing up for a charity fun run or one of my favourite Niagara races. You can start with a 5 Km but maybe test your limits and pick another longer distance later in the year, like a 10 Km race.
This year, I’m working on gathering some coworkers to run in the Jordan 5 km in April.
Also, training for a spring race is a great way to stay active during the colder winter months. Pick another race later in the fall so that you keep your focus on your training!
#3. Recruit a friend
Recruiting an accountability partner is a great way to stay on track. Pick someone who’ll be comfortable with or someone who loves a healthy dose of competition.
I’m lucky to have an identical twin sister who shares the same interests as I do. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to have a twin. However, you might be blessed with a supporting husband or close friends with common interests.
If you don’t, I suggest joining a group and finding new friends with similar interests. Perhaps by joining a fitness class or a running club, you will meet like-minded people.
#4. Journal your experience
I blog! Writing and sharing about my successes, discouragements and inspirations help to keep me motivated, but others might want to keep a diary instead of a publicly viewed blog. I keep records of my races and personal best times. I continually try to improve and push myself physically.
Download your free Running Log and document your journey there!
Conclusion
To summarise, I keep myself motivated to workout by setting goals, signing up for challenges, recruiting some support, and journaling and sharing my experiences.

I totally love that one! It’s a great tip. Sometimes I don’t feel like it, but I get dressed and start running anyway! Before I know it, I’m feeling it! Thanks for that one Carla!
Great tips! Sometimes it is SO hard to get motivated.
I’m actually trying to get back in the game after being out for way too long. I’ve worked out here and there, made some great healthy meals, but just couldn’t find my groove. So today I’m making it financial as well and joining a gym. That extra financial accountability is what made it stick the first time I lost weight and got healthy, so I’m hoping it will help me take off the few extra pounds I’ve put on recently.
Good Luck Becki! Financial accountability would definitely be a great motivator! Thanks for the tip!
I do the same think – I write about it. 🙂 Ok, ok, I must admit that I can’t stay away that loooong without running. After a three day break, I need to get my butt out the door, otherwise I am SO not feeling well. What can I say, it’s LOVE! 🙂 And that’s what keeps me going and motivate other people too. Anyway, nice read and very motivational.
These are great strategies & I use them too in my life to motivate me for varies activities. For art, I sign up for the Twitter challenges & for working out at the gym I recruit a friend. It’s far less intimidating to go to a gym with a friend than alone. Sometimes if it’s something I particularly don’t want to do, I’ll think of a reward to give myself upon completion.
Your blog looks great Lucie! I picked up the WordPress book you told me about & have just started reading it. Hopefully I’ll get moved to WP one of these days!

100% agree with journal the experience. I very recently started doing that with my yoga practice. I’m pretty self taught by YouTube and started sharing how far I’m getting with my poses on IG. It makes me feel good looking back at how far I’ve come.
