How do you get yourself back in shape when you’ve been out of it for so long? It’s not easy, however, today I’m sharing some of my most successful strategies to get motivated to workout.
#1. Set Goals
Every year, I set goals for myself. In the past 5 years, I’ve set some pretty high goals like running in my first half marathon and competing in my first triathlon.
This year, I’m getting down to the basics with working on my nutrition, core and getting stronger.
Setting goals helps me plan my year and see exactly how I want to tackle it. Once my goals are set, I break them down in smaller objectives that are attainable.
#2. Sign-up Yourself Up For A Challenge
One way I keep motivated is by signing up for a charity fun run or one of my favourite Niagara races. This year, I’m working on gathering some coworkers to run in the Jordan 5 km in April.
Also, training for a spring race is a great way to stay active during the colder winter months.
#3. Recruit a friend
I’m lucky to have an identical twin sister who shares the same interests as I do. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to have a twin. You might, however, be blessed with a supporting husband or very close friends with common interests. If you don’t, I suggest joining a group and find new friends with similar interests. Perhaps by joining a fitness class or a running club, you will meet like-minded people.
#4. Journal your experience
I blog! Writing and sharing about my successes, discouragements and inspirations help to keep me motivated, but others might want to keep a diary instead of a publicly viewed blog. I keep records of my races and personal best times. I continually try to improve and push myself physically.
To summarise, I keep myself motivated to workout by setting goals, signing up for challenges, recruiting some support and journaling and sharing my experiences.
