Getting Started with Period Underwear
I’ll be honest; I’ve had period underwear on my radar for quite some time, but anxiety about how it all works had me hesitating. However, I decided to overcome my apprehensions and dive right in. I ordered 3 pairs of Knix Black Cotton Super Leakproof Bikini Period Underwear to give them a fair trial, starting with some at-home testing to build confidence in their effectiveness. I’ve tried them out for a full cycle and can now answer your questions.
How does Period Underwear Work?
One of the most common questions people have about period underwear is how it functions. Period underwear looks and feels just like regular underwear, with one key difference—a built-in absorbent pad in the gusset. According to the Knix website, their period underwear is designed with three layers that work together seamlessly:
1. The anti-odour top layer wicks away moisture from your skin.

2. The inner-layer absorbs the liquid and locks it in.
3. The leak-resistant outer layer keeps any liquid from spotting your clothes.
Knix period underwear is available in different absorbency levels, including high, medium, and light. By selecting the appropriate absorbency for your flow, you can comfortably wear them throughout the day.
Are Period Underwear Safe?
The safety of period underwear is a valid concern, considering their proximity to your skin. After conducting research into Knix underwear, I’m pleased to report that they are free from toxic chemicals. The gusset liner is composed of 86% cotton, 10% spandex, and 4% carbon. The other two layers are made from polyester, which, while not the most sustainable material, provides the necessary absorbency and leak protection.
I personally chose the Cotton Modal Blend Super Leakproof Bikini option. Cotton modal is a more eco-friendly and natural material compared to the nylon and spandex used in other Knix choices. When it comes to sustainable choices, sometimes you have to weigh your options, like disposable pads or tampons versus polyester-based underwear. For me, reusable period underwear emerged as the most sustainable choice.
Is Period Underwear Gross?
This is a common concern for newcomers to period underwear. I can assure you that it’s not gross, but perhaps a bit awkward initially. Trying period underwear for the first time is a unique experience, and I found that giving them a good cold-water rinse before tossing them in the wash was a minor extra step worth taking. I was glad that I had opted for all-black Knix panties, which eliminated any worries about staining.
Comfort and Sizing
In terms of comfort, I found Knix period underwear to be quite comfortable, comparable to my regular underwear. I opted for the cotton-modal blend, which allows my skin to breathe naturally. Using Knix’s online sizing chart helped me select the perfect fit.
How do you wash Period underwear?
Caring for period underwear is straightforward. You can machine wash them in cold water using a mild detergent and tumble dry on low. Hand washing is not necessary, and Knix even includes a lingerie bag with your order to protect the underwear in the washing machine.
Did Knix Period Underwear work for me?
I can confidently say that Knix period underwear worked exceptionally well for me. I tested them in the comfort of my home during my first cycle with them to ensure their reliability. Their performance exceeded my expectations, and they have now become a valuable addition to my zero-waste lifestyle.
Why Knix?
In a world where conversations about menstruation and period underwear are still somewhat hushed, I noticed Knix standing out. Their inclusive and body-positive brand philosophy resonated with me. A quick visit to their website will give you a sense of the inclusivity and positivity they bring to the period product industry, which I find refreshing.
Would you recommend Knix period underwear?
Yes, after testing our Knix period underwear, I would definitely recommend them to anyone who’s looking at healthy, safe and sustainable alternatives to tampons and pads.

Final Knix Period Underwear Review
★★★★★ I’m giving Knix Period Underwear a full Amazing 5-star rating because I really think they are amazing. I am so happy that I moved past my apprehension of using period underwear and made the plunge. I love them, and I was impressed that they worked as described. I feel better about myself for reducing my impact on this planet just a little more.
Three pairs, however, are not quite enough in my opinion! I’ll eventually want to add to my kit and buy at least 3 more pairs to make my zero-waste period kits complete!
However, I’d like to acknowledge that transitioning to any significant lifestyle change can come with an adjustment period. Not everyone will embrace period underwear with the same openness, and that’s perfectly fine. For those who have taken the plunge but are struggling with the adjustment, consider making the shift gradually. Start by wearing them at home, use them as backup, and gradually experiment with them. Remember, you don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly; you need a million people doing zero waste imperfectly.
In conclusion, Knix Period Underwear offers a reliable and sustainable solution for menstrual hygiene. They’ve earned my trust and a permanent place in my zero-waste period kit. As I continue on my sustainability journey, I plan to invest in at least three more pairs to complete my zero-waste period essentials.
If you’re looking to make your periods more eco-friendly and comfortable, I highly recommend giving Knix Period Underwear a try. It’s a small change that can make a big difference—for you and the planet.
With that, I hope this Knix period underwear review has provided you with valuable insights and answers to your questions. Making sustainable choices, one period at a time, has never been more accessible and comfortable.
You don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, you need a million people doing zero waste imperfectly.
