Why choose period underwear? Find out all about it in my Knix period underwear review.
For the last 2 years, I’ve been working on building sustainable habits for myself and my household. Lately, I’ve been looking at what else I can do to be more sustainable. After some thought and analysis, I’m diving into sustainable menstrual products. I talked about adding sustainable menstrual products in a recent post on How to build a zero waste starter kit.
After doing some research on period panty options and what’s best for me, I decided I wanted to give Knix period underwear a try and share my experience with you, in case you were on the fence as well.
I have to admit that I’ve had period underwear on my radar for a long time, however, anxiety over how it all works had me hesitating.
I decided overlook my anxiety and just plunge in. I ordered 3 pairs from Knix to give them a fair trial. As a first test, I wanted to test them in the comfort of home to give me confidence that they’ll actually work.
With this Knix period underwear review, I’m also hoping to answer all of the burning questions that might be holding you back from trying period underwear. Perhaps you wondering the same things I was?

So, in order to give you this Knix period underwear review, I invested in 3 pairs of Knix Black Cotton Super Leakprrof Bikini Period Underwear. I’ve tried them out for a full cycle and can now answer your questions.
How does Period Underwear Work?
Period underwear look and feel just like normal underwear. except they have an absorbent pad in the gusset. According to the Knix website. Knix period underwear is made with 3 layers that work together:
1. The anti-odour top layer wicks away moisture from your skin.https://knix.ca/collections/period-underwear?loc=Main-ShopAllNav-LP&nav=PeriodUnderwear
2. The inner-layer absorbs the liquid and locks it in.
3. The leak-resistant outer layer keeps any liquid from spotting your clothes.
Knix period underwear comes in different absorbencies high, medium and light. If you select the right absorbency for your flow, you should be able to wear them all day long.
Are Period Underwear Safe?
This is a valid question considering how intimately close to your skin underwear are. With some research into Knix underwear, I’m happy to report that yes, Knix period underwear is free of toxic chemicals. The gusset liner is 86% cotton, 10% spandex and 4% carbon. The other 2 layers are made from polyester. Polyester is not the most sustainable choice of material, however, it does make it absorbent and leakproof.
I selected the Cotton modal blend superleak proof bikini. Cotton modal is an eco-friendlier, natural material. The other Knix choices are made of nylon and spandex making them a less sustainable choice.
Sometimes when faced with sustainable choices, you have to weigh your options, what’s better, tossing pads or tampons in the trash versus wearing underwear made of polyester? For me, reusable, period underwear is the most sustainable option!
Are Period Underwear Gross?
Hum, another valid question you might have! I was definitely not grossed out. Not gross, but perhaps awkward at first! I mean, trying period underwear for the first time is a different experience. I just gave my period underwear a good cold water rinse before adding them to the wash. I think it is an extra step that might deter some from using period underwear.
I like that I purchased all black Knix period underwear. That way, you don’t have to deal with staining or anything like that!
Are Period Underwear Comforatble?
Yes. I found that Knix period underwear were quite comfortable, like my regular underwear. I prefer the more natural materials such as the cotton-modal blend that allows my skin to breathe, that’s why I opted for the modal blend option. I used Knix online sizing chart and the fit was just right!
How do you wash Period Undwear?
Luckily, you can machine wash your Knix period underwear in cold water using a mild detergent, and tumble dry on low. Hand washing not necessary! Knix tossed in a lingerie bag bag with my order, so I just toss them in the bag before I throw them in the washing machine. Hopefully that will help protect them and they’ll last longer.
Did Knix Period Underwear work for me?
Absolutley, I was impressed on how well they really worked. I tested them in the comfort of my own home to give me some confidence that they’d do their job. Otherwise, it could have made things a bit more awkward, But having tested them out, I now feel confident in using them again. They will definitely be a asset to my zero-waste objectives.
Why did you choose to try Knix Brand of Period Underwear?
Even in 2022, women don’t talk much about their period, forget about period underwear. At least not in my circle. I’ve seen ads for Knix, and I’ve heard of Knix period underwear through a forum. And, when doing some research, the Knix brand kept coming up again and again.
The Knix brand does appeal to me because they seem to be a body-positive, inclusive brand. If you look at their website, you’ll see what I mean, and frankly, I find that very refreshing!
Whould you recommend Knix period underwear?
Yes, after testing our Knix period underwear, I would definitely recommend them to anyone who’s looking at healthy, safe and sustainable alternatives to tampons and pads.

Product Review Rating System
Here’s how my reviews work. I rate items on a 5-star system. From AMAZING (5 stars) to not worth buying (1 star).
Not worth buying ★☆☆☆☆
Final Knix Period Underwear Review
★★★★★ I’m giving Knix Period Underwear a full Amazing 5-star rating because I really think they are amazing. I am so happy that I moved past my apprehension of using period underwear and made the plunge. I love them, and I was impressed that they worked as described. I feel better about myself for reducing my impact on this planet just a little more.
Three pairs, however, are not quite enough in my opinion! I’ll eventually want to add to my kit and buy at least 3 more pairs to make my zero-waste period kits complete!
But before I end this review, I want to acknowledge that there is a period of adjustment when it comes to making any major lifestyle changes. Not everyone will have the same openness to period underwear and that’s OK. For those who made the plunge, bought some period underwear and are having a hard time adjusting to it, make the change in small increments. Try them when you are at home, use them as backup and slowly experiment with them!
You don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, you need a million people doing zero waste imperfectly.Unknown
