Do you know which 5 running items to splurge on?
When it comes to running gear, there are so many choices to make. What brand of shoes do you need? What style of outfit looks best? Or, which accessories to get? When you first start out running, it’s hard to decide exactly what you’ll need versus what’s a luxury or just nice to have!

There are so many companies out there ready to part you with your hard-earned money, how do you know what’s worth spending your money on?
This week, I have a list of 5 items you should definitely splurge on right now even if you are just starting.
Splurge 1. Running Shoes
Topping my like of 5 running items to splurge on are running shoes. It’s imperative to have good running shoes. There are so many kinds of running shoes out there, it’s overwhelming. I suggest going to your local running shop and letting the experts help you pick the right shoe.
The one I go to will do an assessment and recommend several pairs that will suit your running style. Good shoes don’t come cheap, but this one item is the most important one for running. It could help protect you from injury.
Splurge 2. Sign up for a Race
For me, signing up for races is the single, biggest motivator. I set my sights on a goal race about 8 weeks away, create a training plan and stick to it.
I don’t want to fail, so I do my very best to push myself hard and to complete all the workouts. If it weren’t for the races, I’m not sure I would be so diligent in sticking to my plan.
Splurge 3. Running App on Smartphone/GPS Watch
Making my list of 5 running items to splurge on is a smart phone or GPS watch. If you need one thing to keep you motivated while out for a run, a running app on your smartphone will do the trick. It’s so much more motivating to have technology that will calculate distance and speed for you as well as track your progress.
If you have a smartphone already, it won’t be much of a splurge since there are plenty of free running apps such as Nike Run Club or Strava. Plus, your smartphone will have music, which is also a great motivator.
If you have a smartphone, you will also want to have some kind of armband to hold your phone if you don’t have pockets. You’ll get tired of holding it in your hands, especially on long runs. I now use the Apple watch and I love training with it since I don’t have to hold it. I also love that it measures my heart rate and I can easily determine my heart rate zone!
Splurge 4. Great Headphones or Earbuds
I love listening to music when I run, it’s very motivating. The longer the run, the more I feel I need music to keep me on track. I used to use the standard earbuds that came with my iPhone and they kept falling out.
I currently use a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that do the trick.
Splurge 5. Body Glide
For the first 2 years of running, Body Glide or any other anti-chaffing products wouldn’t have made my list but now that I am running longer distances (10 km or longer) in warmer weather, I need this. I went for a long run this week and came home with chaffing under my arms and between my thighs #RunnerProblems.
Ok, there you have it, a list of 5 running items to splurge on if you are serious about taking up running and changing your lifestyle. Tell me, what running items do you feel runners should splurge on?

I love my Garmin 220. I can’t imagine not having it as it allows me to train anywhere that I am without having to preplan a route. It’s definitely my best running splurge.
And totally yes on the shoes and I’d add running bra to the list. ;o)
I’m definitely eyeing a Garmin!
I’m not a runner but I love that pair of Nike sneakers! That is such a pretty pair and I have been looking for a new one for myself.

They are cool eh? I have the same shoe, but mine are just black. Next time I buy a pair, I want them to be some funky colour! It’s more inspiring that way!
I’m not a runner but when I do exercise I always have my noise cancelling headphones so I can zone out and stop counting the minutes until it is over. Luckily I usually exercise indoors so I am not in harms way with my headphones on.

I definitely agree with the earphones! Comfortable earphones are a MUST when I run! And of course, a great pair of running shoes 🙂
I want to add Spotify to the list! I just discovered the app and LOVE It! It goes with the earphone thing! 🙂
